AIIMS Gorakhpur - All things you want to know

The All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is a group of autonomous government public medical universities for higher education and comes under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

These institutes have been established by an Act of Parliament as The Institutes of National Importance.   

AIIMS New Delhi, the main authoritative institute among all, was established in 1956. Since then, 24 more institutes were announced. As of January 2022, nineteen institutes are operating and five more are expected to operate until 2025.

Proposals were made for six more AIIMS, and this will not only make the health sector broader but also create huge employment.  

AIIMS Gorakhpur is a public medical university located in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, and one of the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences. It was established in one of the  "Phase-IV" All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)  in July 2014.  

In July 2014,  in the budget speech for 2014–15, the Minister of Finance Arun Jaitley announced a budget of ₹500 crores (equivalent to ₹679 crores or US$89 million in 2020) for setting up four new AIIMS, in Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra and the Purvanchal region in Uttar Pradesh,  which is called "Phase-IV" institutes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the very foundation of AIIMS Gorakhpur on 22 July 2016. An outpatient department (OPD) started on 24 February 2019 and the first batch of 50 MBBS students started later that year, making it one of six AIIMSs to become operational in 2019.   Thereafter,  Surekha Kishor was appointed director in March 2020.

The current capacity of admission is huge with now 300 Students in MBBS.   In recent times, The executive director of AIIMS Gorakhpur, Dr. Surekka Kishore was alleged to have forced medical students to show her their private messages and files on their mobile phones. It was also alleged she directed guards of the institutes to confine students in their rooms, But the institution denies on this.

We don't know whether it's one of the rumors developed to hamper a prestigious image or true fact.  

TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENT 

• Besides the well-functioning machinery of the institution, it also enabled e-Sushrut HMIS, Hospital Management Information System is a major step towards adopting technology in the health sector.

• HMIS involves an integrated computerized clinical information system for improved hospital administration and patient health care. It also provides an accurate, electronically stored medical record of the patient.

• A data warehouse of such records can be utilized for statistical requirements and for research. The real-time HMIS streamlines the treatment flow of patients and smoothly empowers the workforce to perform to their best ability, in an optimized and efficient manner.

• It is modeled on the unique combination of a ‘patient-centric and medical staff-centric paradigm, thus providing benefits to both the recipients and the providers of healthcare. It ensures dramatic improvement in performance along with reducing costs.  

• An Electronic Health Record (EHR) is an electronic version of a patient’s overall health record. It contains medical history, diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, immunization dates, allergies, and test results of a patient within a particular time period.
• Integrated Medical Billing system for OPD, IPD, and Ancillary Services. Improved UI on cash collection desks, equipped with Patient Wallet, and this really helped in the commotion related to the time of emergency, this is really one of the best initiatives opted.
• Do not spend hours on patient registration and lab tests. Smart HMIS system generates a unique barcode for every new patient registration and lab sample. Patients' OPD/IPD files will have a barcode sticker on it and only takes seconds to scan and offer hospital services like revisits, billing, pharmacy and IPD services, etc. Better tracking due to less human error, save time and money.
• Integrated Dashboard Works in real-time management information system, visual presentation for quick statistics to hospital authorities.Dynamic Report provide facility to generate report due to variability in transactions and its associated with frequent update in the entry.
• Provisional Registration services with Aadhaar QR Scan provision through Mobile App and Web Portal services. Features such as Online investigation report view/download and comprehensive Doctor login desk provisions are also been provided in mobile apps, which can be installed by every smartphone user outside and it decreases the bridge practically between those marginalized people and medical entities. 

From an Educational point of view 

• AIIMS Gorakhpur offers a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at the UG level. The duration of the program is four and a half years, excluding one year of rotating internship compulsory for all the students.

• Candidates should have completed 17 years of age as of December 31 of the year of admission to be eligible for the MBBS program. The annual intake for the MBBS program is 50 seats.

• According to most recent updates, only a few percent of the students are admitted among the huge ratio of Reservations categories, For improving this mischief, the institutes are raising issues to Government and to deal with they have also introduced some positive practices like Paying of fee in installments, etc.
